Lord, Teach Us to Pray - Part 3
Robby Pollard, Lead Pastor
Luke 11:1-4
1Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread, 4and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”
“Father” reminds us of our relationship.
“Hallowed” reminds us to worship.
“Your kingdom come” reminds us of the good news: Jesus is king.
Luke 11:3
3Give us each day our daily bread,
Genesis 2:7
7then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
John 3:16
16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Luke 11:5-9
5And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Luke 11:10-13
10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Luke 11:3
3Give us each day our daily bread,
Exodus 16:2-3
2And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
Exodus 16:4-5
4Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.”
Exodus 16:4
4Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
Exodus 16:13-18
13In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp. 14And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. 16This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’” 17And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. 18But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat.
Exodus 16:35
35The people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan.
John 6:48-51
48I am the bread of life. 49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
Romans 3:23
23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Luke 22:15-16
15And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you I will not eat ituntil it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
Psalm 37:25
25I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.
“Give us each day our daily bread” reminds us: God sustains and Jesus satisfies.
Luke 11:4
4and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”
John 14:9
9…Whoever has seen me has seen the Father…
Luke 23:34
34And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
Colossians 3:13-14
13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
Luke 11:4
4and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”
We love the cross, but we don’t always love what the cross calls us to.
Colossians 3:13
13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
Forgiveness is freely offered, but it is not free.
Forgiveness is an act of grace.
Forgiveness is releasing the debt.
Forgiveness is unfair.
The power to forgive is in the power of the cross.
Matthew 18:21-25
21Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23“Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.
