Living as Light in a Dark World

Romans 12:1–2
¹ I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. ² Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 1:16
¹⁶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Romans 3:28
²⁸ For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Romans 4:5
⁵ And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,

Romans 6:1–2
¹ What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? ² By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

How we are to live as light in a dark world

Matthew 5:14–16
¹⁴ You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵ Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. ¹⁶ In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Philippians 2:15
¹⁵ …that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

Ephesians 5:8
⁸ For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

1 Thessalonians 5:5
⁵ For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.

Proverbs 4:18
¹⁸ But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.

Romans 12:9
⁹ Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Love genuinely

Romans 12:9
⁹ Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Hate evil, hold fast to good

Romans 12:10
¹⁰ Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

Love your brothers

Outdo in showing honor

Romans 12:11
¹¹ Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.

Serve God passionately

Romans 12:12
¹² Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Live with joyful, steadfast dependence on God

Romans 12:13
¹³ Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Open your arms to others

Romans 12:14
¹⁴ Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.

Bless your enemies

Romans 12:15
¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

Be compassionate

Romans 12:16
¹⁶ Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.

Live in harmony

Be humble

Romans 12:17
¹⁷ Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

Do not repay evil for evil

Romans 12:18
¹⁸ If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Live peaceably

Romans 12:19
¹⁹ Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

Leave vengeance in the hands of God

Romans 12:20
²⁰ To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Overcome evil with good

Romans 13:8–14
⁸ Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. ⁹ For the commandments… are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ¹⁰ Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. ¹¹ Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. ¹² The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. ¹³–¹⁴ Let us walk properly as in the daytime… put on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 13:12
¹² The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
