Saved, Sent and Speaking
Pastor, John Owen
The Great Commission
Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Romans 10:9-17 answers three critical questions:
1. What must I do to be saved?
2. Who can be saved?
3. How will anyone hear?
Romans 10:9-10
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Salvation is Received by Faith in Christ
Romans 10:9-10
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Salvation is Available to Everyone
Romans 10:11-13
For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will
be saved.”
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Salvation Must be Proclaimed
Romans 10:14-15
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
Paul’s Gospel Logic
1. People must call to be saved
2. They must believe to call
3. They must hear to believe
4. Someone must preach for them to hear
5. Someone must be sent to preach
Romans 10:14-15
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
God uses Human Voices
Romans 10:14-15
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
The Gospel will be Rejected by Some
Romans 10:16
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?”
Faith Comes Through Hearing Christ
Romans 10:17
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Romans 10 reminds us:
1. Salvation is received by faith
2. Salvation is available to everyone
3. Salvation must be proclaimed
4. Faith comes through hearing Christ
Have You Believed?
Are You Speaking?
“God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called”
We are saved by faith in Christ, and we are sent to proclaim Christ — so that others may hear, believe, and call on the name of the Lord.
